Fauna
Version franτaise
The origins of the Reunionese fauna are essentially African and Malagasy. But
many species have then evolved to become endemic.

The chameleon, alias the Sleeper |
No dangerous animal has moved in the island. Neither poisonous species
nor fierce beast. The ocean is not generally dangerous either, even if
there are some sharks
(on the open sea, and on some occasions near the coast).
Birds were certainly the first inhabitants of the island. There are still
very numerous, although they have been widely hunted. Species are
often endemic, some have completely disappeared. On the other hand,
Sea birds (like the Paille-en-Queue) may be found in other places.
 |
The Paille-en-Queue |
Extraordinary animals, like the Solitary (cousin of the Dodo of Mauritius),
the big tortoise and the gigantic turtle have been eaten by the first settlers.
They don't exist anymore.
Mammals (pets and cattle) have been brought in by the settlers.
Insects make up a great part of the endemic fauna. Many species of butterflies
and other beetles are still not listed.
Introduction of plants in Reunion island is forbidden to prevent from
bringing in insects that are harmful for the crops, and whose proliferation
is accelerated by the tropical climate.
